"George Lucas got Dumped on by Hollywood" - My Thoughts

In this video I want to talk about the new book by JW Wrinzler titled Howard Kazanjian: A Producer's Life and in particular the part where George Lucas didn't even get a nomination for Episode 1's costumes which is ridiculous. I think Hollywood, as George has explained with disdain, always dumped on George for just being the rogue filmmaker who didn't need Hollywood.
There are many youtube clips of George giving speeches about Hollywood. I'd highly recommend checking them out.

Guild nominations such as the Oscars are more political anyways. It's the people's choice awards and box office numbers that really matter. I think George Lucas has been sticking it up the butts of Actor Guilds by making way more money than those nominated or those recieving their awards.

The problem George faced in getting Oscar nominations for the prequels was since a big studio was not going to profit from a nomination, there was no massive “for you consideration” campaign. Studios spend hundreds of thousands of dollars to get movies nominations.

George Lucas blazed his own trail and rejected Hollywood, that's why he's so rich now. No studio owned Star Wars, he did. He put his own money into it after the original film. It paid off big time. And he's been very vocal about how he did it all without corporate Hollywood's help. So yeah, they don't like him at all.

As I say often, I completely agree with you. Those costumes were amazing and my gf who just watched the original 6 starting with OT for the first time said TPM was one of her favorites. Not for the story as much as the characters and costumes, and she loved the Podracing lol. But she specifically loved the Japanese inspired costumes of Padmé and other characters. All in all, George deserved at least a nomination. I believe that because his creativity went wild and had the ability to do so (which as you know he wanted to do with the OT but didn’t have the tech) that Hollywood kinda just thought he was crazy for being so outta the box so to speak with his movie making. I mean, the man did revolutionize the way movies are made.

The star wars films 1-6 are almost perfect films in many ways. Music is perfect, set design and costumes are perfect, world building is one of the best ever. They came up with a unique aesthetic that is instantly recognisable and arguably the greatest in the history of fiction. The only thing that sucked was dialogue and yeah that did suck pretty hard and George's direction of the actors wasn't the best. But if those things were fixed all 6 of them would be masterpieces.

I got to be honest, I love Star Wars and the prequel trilogy was a major embarrassment and almost destroyed Star Wars, its what is happening with the Fantastic Beasts, Both JK and Lucas are wonderful storytellers and Lucas influenced Hollywood as much as Spielberg did but both need screen writers and others to ensure their stories are revised for a film, dont get me wrong there are some great things regarding the prequel trilogy but I dont watch them, the sequel trilogy minus the force awakens was another set back but as bad and again what happens when you dont have your ducks in a row, again just my opinion, I have been a movie watcher since the 80's and when I put my movie hat and take away my nerd one the movies are bad

@Star Wars Theory; search “Francis Ford Coppola thoughts on future of film”. It’s 36 seconds. It’s from an interview he gave decades ago. Coppola was bad-ass. He couldn’t find anyone to finance “Apocalypse Now”, so he said to hell with Hollywood; sold his house, took his wife, took his kids out of school, etc. to the Philippines and did it himself. Have you seen his wife’s documentary about the making of “Apocalypse Now”? It’s titled “Heart of Darkness”, from the book in which it is inspired. He lost something like 80 lbs. while he was there (I forget how many years). Anyway, George Lucas learned from the Master.

I agree. the costumes in Phantom Menace are the best hollywood has ever seen. no movie can claim to have better costumes, and very, very few can claim to have as good. they are beyond compare. visually, episode 1 was one of the most striking, beautiful, and opulent movies ever made. Naboo and Coruscant are gorgeous, and even the pod race scene in Mos Espa is humbly breathtaking in a sense of almost feeing like a refugee city. Padme's wardrobe alone should've won an award, let alone the senate guards and the naboo aesthetics. The underwater Gungan city was like nothing anyone had ever seen. even the gungan swamps and naboo plains were beautiful. I really appreciated the stark difference between the opulent beauty of the Republic to that of the stark stoicness of the Empire. two totally different visual worlds. Something i like about the Mandalorian is that it shows another visual world, after the fall of the empire. where everything is in decay and disrepair. you can feel the 'new-poor' attitude of everyone in the Mandalorian series. it is what i imagine life feeling like after the second sacking of Rome. that was something the sequal trilogy failed to capture despite their stunning but meaningless visuals. they couldn't create a vibe the way the originals, the prequels, and Mando did.

Lucas was basically an outsider (independent filmmaker) who was very successful. He created Lucasfilm so that he could have control over his films and avoid meddling from Hollywood executives. Due to his successes and wealth Hollywood resented him. Plus, Lucas also created ILM which Hollywood had to employ for vfx to stay competitive in the game of making blockbusters which, Lucas had revolutionized with Star Wars. So the Hollywood studios dumped on him and were also more than happy to dump on him through their surrogates when the Prequels and Kingdom of the Crystal Skull came out.

When you use your own money and own studio to produce a movie and cut out Hollywood big wigs then of course they will never ever nominate you for any awards. Basically you have the biggest name in the world of STAR WARS and you basically cut out Hollywood altogether on producing it and all the spoils and money it made. So why would you ever think they would give you a pat on the back for cutting them out of billions of dollars. It's a business. You can't go against the grain and get filthy rich solo then expect to your peers to say good job when you basically ruled the industry and left them out to dry. You get what im saying here? George is naive to think this way and im shocked he actually expected to win. Yes we all know he should have won. But the fact he thought he actually was going to after doing what i just said is laughable and the fact that he even cares is more laughable. Like George would you been happier if you included them, made just 30% on everything and produced a shit movie because their studio and writers ruined it. But then you win every award? No! He did it his way, made masterpieces, got filthy rich and shouldn't be sad. I mean perfect example look at the last 3 KATHLEEN put out. They sucked! That's what would have happened to his if he included them. Got awards for garbage.

Hollywood can take a flying leap off a cliff. I love the authenticity and unrivaled creativity of Lucas' work and literally NO franchise has even come close to impacting my life the way George Lucas' Star Wars has. I love the PREQUELS (and the OT), no matter how many haters and whiners insult them. Why? Because all of George Lucas' work has a level of spirituality and inspiration that soul-dead, empty, vacuous, useless Hollywood, for all of its glamour and prestige, LACKS, and they envy Lucas for that. I can only imagine how the creation of Star Wars revolutionized an entire generation tired of warmongering, tense racial relations, and corrupt American "leaders" and actually brought HOPE and light to people who wanted to dream of more. Why do you think many new Star Wars fans can watch one of his works and then fall in love and just become completely fascinated with the Star Wars galaxy??? I know I did. Once I saw TCW, I was so impressed by the nobility and values of the Jedi Order and how most of them strove to uphold what they believed was their Republic. Even if they weren't perfect, I loved the contrast the Jedi gave me to the current society and "community" I was in, one that lacked any true sense of community, compassion, or brotherhood. And I craved the inner peace, serenity, and harmony that the Jedi Code taught about. I grew up a Christian but SW helped me to understand practical ways to practice detachment and seek control over my emotions so that I now have a level of contentment I've never had before. I experienced KOTOR (which showed me the pinnacle of Star Wars philosophy and the greatest potential of the Jedi to be a force for good), it was all history from there. The Jedi gave me belonging and even the Sith taught me much about persistence and willpower. I have learned so many lessons from SW and its amazing characters, from Bastila Shan to Master Vandar to Kreia to Obi-Wan Kenobi, Qui-Gon Jin, and Luke Skywalker that people who were "mentors" in my life could have NEVER taught me. And this all came from a story about a farmboy on Tatooine. Has Lucas needed some input and help to bring his ideas to fruition? YES! Any visionary needs support and an exceptional team and that's fine. It is a blessing that he found the team of producers and writers that he had for the OT. That is why those films are so iconic and are compared to the prequels so often because they so radically changed the world when they were released. I don't understand the intense prequels hate because they still encouraged us to dream and produced the most epic SW music yet, no matter how "faulty" they seemed. A story must be told completely not just at the "exciting" parts. Lucas' personal work touches people because it has his SPARK, and we can all see how recent Star Wars material has made people crave that spark that Lucas gave to everything. George Lucas has changed my life and the lives of countless others. He should realize that Hollywood HATES authenticity and not strive to receive recognition from them because they will never give him the recognition he truly deserves. But rest assured that amidst all of the criticism, if he knew the impact he has made in the lives of his true fans- in my opinion - he would know that it has exceeded his wildest dreams! Thank you, George Lucas, for being a VISIONARY and following the call to relay the story of a galaxy far, far away.

It took something as bad as the sequels to show us exactly how good the prequels were

I say fuck the Sequels, I still think it's okay if you like them. But the Prequels are Star Wars for me. I kno they're not perfect, but neither is the Original Trilogy. The Sequels LOOK beautiful, and are for the most part visually stunning. BUT they are lacking very much in story and character development. The main reason I dislike the Sequels is because they lacked respect for the Original Trilogy characters. Much like a younger kid not respecting their elders and shitting all over them by badmouthing or talking shit to them. I will always say that Luke should've been a total badass by the time the Sequels take place, AND we should've gotten a scene with ALL of the main cast of the Original Trilogy characters (Han, Leia, Luke, Chewbacca, Lando, C-3PO and R2D2) That's jus my opinion on the matter, and I'm glad that Marcia Lucas spoke out about the Sequels but it's sad we are jus now hearing it.

To be honest. After the disaster of the Sequels, I've learned to appreciate the Prequels a bit more. I still think they are extremely flawed, and have a lot of issues.......didn't exactly match the spark the Original Trilogy produced for me. However, I do think George got too much shit.

George Lucas retired years ago as a multibillionaire and people are still saying what they think about him like they matter.

George gotten to so much trouble creating Star Wars. He had to come out of pocket a million dollars fined pre movies because he kept doing the black screen credit rolls. Back in the 70s and 80s that was a no, no.

It’s simple: Disney bought the IP and tried to placate the woke culture of The Academy with 7, 8, & 9. It’s backfired with the people that matter, the fans.
